Finding Alternatives to Our Favourite Team Sports during Lockdown

68

One of the negatives of lockdown is the effect that it has had on those who are sporty, particularly if you play team sports. Unfortunately, a lot of team sports involve some sort of contact, so they aren’t really COVID safe and have been put on hold as a result.

Although this is really annoying, one positive is that it will give you an opportunity to try some new sports that don’t require contact with a team of people who aren’t inside your household. If you are looking for alternatives to your favorite team sports whilst in lockdown, take a look through some of these options.

1. Try Home Baseball

Home baseball is a great sport to try during lockdown since it can be done from the comfort of your own home in a risk-free environment. All of the equipment needed for home baseball has been completely designed with home use in mind, so you won’t have to adjust any elements of it. Anytime Baseball Supply has a wide range of professional equipment, which is so effective that you won’t be missing the real thing. This is great for both newbies and those who have more experience with baseball, as you can buy different sized batting cages, depending on how far you hit. Whether you are starting as a complete beginner or practicing professionally, you are guaranteed to have lots of fun.

2. Take Up Running

Running is a great alternative to a team sport during lockdown since you are not reliant on anybody but yourself. Therefore, there is no pressure on you to be super speedy when you start out or to reach any strict goals. The beauty of running is that it can be done anywhere at any time, so you won’t be limited by your surroundings. You can also completely alter the intensity depending on your experience and your own physical capabilities.

The trick is with getting into running is not to push yourself too much the first time. You need to build up your runs so that you can work towards something big and not feel too out of breath. Start with something short, like a 10-minute run, and each time you go out you can add on 5 minutes until you eventually reach your goals. Don’t be put off if you find it hard initially – everyone has to start somewhere!

3. Try Out Yoga

Yoga is a form of exercise that people often forget about. You couldn’t find anything more different to team sports than yoga, but there is no harm in trying out something new. Yoga is great for your physical health in that it both strengthens your body as well as stretching it out, so it is really ideal if you are feeling a bit stiff. This will help you feel much more relaxed and in control, so when you eventually can start playing your team sport again you will feel much more agile and flexible.

Yoga is a widely accessible sport, as there are free yoga videos dotted around everywhere that you can watch and join in with. Usually, all that is required is a yoga mat, which can be bought for reasonable prices. Other than that, all you need is a bit of space and a Wi-Fi connection!

Lockdown isn’t ideal for anyone, especially when it means that we aren’t able to do some of the activities we like to do the most. However, to stay cheerful we must try and make small adaptations to our lifestyles so that instead of being miserable about what we aren’t doing, we can focus on developing great new skills.
