The Importance of Sleep In Our Lives

5384

Sleep is essential for your survival. When your body sleeps, there are many processes that begin to repair various tissues in your brain and other places in your body. Having this process complete every night is essential for your long-term health.

There is a chronic problem in modern society where people don’t get enough sleep. This lack of sleep has led to severe health issues for a lot of people and will continue to get worse if this problem isn’t corrected.

Your mind needs sleep in order to function correctly in the long term. There have been studies where people were deprived of sleep for a long time and they essentially could not function. When you are in bed, choosing between many sleeping positions is also essential for feeling great in the morning.

What Is Sleep

To understand why sleep is essential, you must understand what sleep is. During the day when you are awake, there are processes happening in your brain that cause toxins and other chemicals to build up. These toxins are a normal part of the way you live, but they need to be removed periodically in order for you to have good health in the long term.

Sleeping is the time when your body can repair all the damage and remove all the toxins from your brain. Without it, these toxins can lead to serious diseases in the future and can lead to you having a low quality of life.

What Are Sleep Cycles?

When you sleep, you do it in cycles. Each sleep cycle is about 90 minutes and involves various phases that change based on the time.

  1. At first, you start out with light sleep which you can easily be awoken from.
  2. After that, you have a deeper sleep and REM sleep.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is usually when you have your dreams and it is a small part of each cycle of your sleep. Deeper sleep is where you are out cold and, generally, where most of the repair that goes on in your brain happens. It is an essential component of the process and finishing a cycle is essential.

You will feel groggy and tired if you don’t sleep a full cycle. Being woken during a cycle will lead to you not having a great day. You will constantly feel like you are falling asleep even when you have slept enough. It is better for you to have less sleep but sleep in complete cycles. It is bad for you to sleep a long time and then be awoken during a cycle.

How Long Should You Sleep?

Length of sleep is also an important thing to consider. It is much better for you to sleep a complete cycle than it is to sleep for a long time.

The most important thing when sleeping is that you should do it for 7 to 9 hours.

You also have to take into consideration that each sleep cycle is around 90 minutes and so whatever time you choose to sleep must be in correlation to that.

Best Devices to Help You Sleep

If you are having trouble sleeping, there are many sleeping aids to help you get the rest you need. These sleep aids will go a long way in helping you feel relaxed and calm. However, a sleep aid is no replacement for fixing the underlying issue and getting to sleep properly.

The most important thing for you to consider is – Will you become dependent on this sleep aid?

Your body sleeps best when your bedroom is about 60°F and it is perfectly dark inside. You also want to not be exposed to any blue lights before you sleep. Melatonin production is also another factor that decides how long you need to sleep.

Why You Need to Sleep

Sleeping is an essential component of having a productive day. When you don’t sleep, you will have a hazy mind that cannot focus and will prevent you from being useful. You also not be able to control your appetite.

A huge downside of not sleeping enough is gaining weight. When you don’t sleep, you end up having problems with overeating and feeling hungry even when you have eaten. This is why it is recommended to get enough sleep as everything in your day is based on the quality of sleep you got the night before.
