12 Experts Who Are Defining Health Industry

476

“Leadership is not practiced so much in words as in attitude and action.”

I don’t know who said that, but these are few of the best words said on leadership. We all have a little leader in ourselves who drives and guides us in life. But more often than not, we tend to forego his advice and decide to go with what the experts have to say. When the matters are about health and fitness, this can be a risky thing to do.

So to avoid that risk of following the wrong information and getting yourself bulldozed, we made a list of 12 health influencers and thought leaders who are playing a critical role in shaping up the health and fitness industry. These people have gone a step further from being just a personal leader to being an icon or a face for the cause of health.

After we were done, we thought why restrict ourselves to just fitness and added most loved personalities who guide us towards holistic living. Have a look!

Fitness Icons

#Fitness icons of 2014 - Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rich Froning

Arnold Schwarzenegger

This actor, celebrity and fitness icon needs no introduction. Being on the shadier side of 60s hasn’t made him any less motivated or bulkier. This is quite evident from his last movies, Maggie and The Sabotage. Gubernational duties, speaking engagements, film work and issues in personal life – inspiring is the way he dabbles with them all with such grace and hold.

“The resistance that you fight physically in the gym and the resistance that you fight in life can only build a strong character.” ~ Arnold Schwarzenegger

What we would want you to do: Get your hands on his nutritional supplements launched last year and his autobiography, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story

Rich Froning

What happens when you win the CrossFit Games? You are deemed as fit, right?! But what would you call someone who does that pretty much every year? The Fittest Man on Earth! Yes, that’s what Rich Froning is known as. Working as a head coach in his gym, CrossFit Mayhem, Froning is a certified Crossfit Level 1 instructor in Tennessee. Bucking up his present certification in Crossfit Olympic Lifting, he is currently pursuing Masters in Exercise Science.

“I wouldn’t say that God made me win in 2011, but the spirituality of it has helped me be stronger mentally. Physically, you can only go so far, and the rest is mental.” ~ Rich Froning

What we would want you to do: Lay hands on his memoir titled “First: What It Takes to Win” which will open a window for you to the bumpy road to success, inside and outside the gym.

Fitness Trainers

#Fitness trainers of 2014 - Jillian Michaels and Shaun T

Jillian Michaels

Best known for her demanding personality in “The Biggest Loser” as a weight loss mentor, Jillian is an innovator in essence. A New York Times bestselling author, she is known for her home fitness DVDs, inspirational tours and lifestyle coaching. Her speeches on happiness, goal setting and harnessing your potential are worth lending an ear. Try them sometime.

“Whenever you’re making an important decision, first ask if it gets you closer to your goals or farther away. If the answer is closer, pull the trigger. If it’s farther away, make a different choice. Conscious choice making is a critical step in making your dreams a reality.” ~ Jillian Michaels

What we would want you to do: If you are looking for a bridal weight loss routine or post pregnancy workout, grab her 30 Day Shred Program and get going!

Shaun Thompson (Shaun T)

A recognized face on TV, trainer Shaun T comes from a background of theater, television, and dance. And that’s where he got the inspiration to design a fitness program, “Hip Hop Abs.” Although what sets him apart is “Insanity”, a 60-day workout challenge which is touted as a challenging and effective home workout.

“The only thing that sucks is that you have two sides to your body. Don’t hate me, love me, cuz I’m gonna make you look good!” ~ Shaun T

Nutrition Experts

#Nutrition #Experts of 2014 - Dr. Marion Nestle and Joy Bauer

Dr. Marion Nestle

I’d want to describe this woman as a Food Politician because of her passion for food and commentaries on policy making. She not only advocates healthy eating for humans but animals as well. She holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and a Masters in Public Health, and has authored many books including, “Why Calories Count” and “Feed Your Pet Right.”

“The best way to eat is to eat lots of different kinds of foods. Except for breast milk, no one food is perfect.” ~ Marion Nestle

What we would want you to do: Follow her on Twitter and stay updated with the latest research, policies, her articles on The Atlantic, and everything food related.

Joy Bauer

An advocate of a vibrant, flavorful plate, Joy Bauer believes people have a emotional and psychological connection (addiction) with sugar and that’s why it is difficult to give it up entirely. She is a registered dietitian and nutritionist and a household name from her TV show, “The TODAY Show.” An author to multiple cookbooks and weight loss diet books, she is also an exclusive nutritionist for the New York City Ballet.

“Men have a tendency to grab whatever’s convenient and also gravitate to whatever they grew up on. Women worry earlier, so they are more knowledgeable about good nutrition at an earlier age.” ~ Joy Bauer

What we would want you to do: Check out her amazing YouTube video series, “What the Heck Are You Eating?” and make informed decisions about food and eating habits.

Yoga & Spirituality

yoga and spirituality gurus of 2014 - Dr. Deepak Chopra and Kathryn Budig

Dr. Deepak Chopra

When it comes to spirituality in its holistic essence, the first name that pops into my head is: Deepak Chopra. On his website, you can find information ranging from western medicine to alternative medicine, from Ayurveda to supplements, yoga, meditation and even basic life wisdom.

“In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” ~ Dr. Deepak Chopra

What we would want you to do: Gain insights from his super lifesaver book, “Super Brain: Unleashing the Explosive Power of Your Mind” and stay calm.

Kathryn Budig

World renowned yoga teacher, author of “The Women’s Health Big Book of Yoga” and the face of Yogaglo.com, Kathryn Budig is my ideal for using her craft in a compassionate manner. Her organization, “Poses for Paws” is all about raising money for animal shelters through yoga poses.

“Embrace the quirks, embrace your individuality, embrace where you are in life. No one else is like you, and that is special, and that is unique.” ~ Kathryn Budig

What we would want you to do: Try her yoga DVD, “Aim True Yoga” and subscribe to her insightful articles from The Huffington Post, Women’s Health Magazine, Gaiam and Yoga Journal.

Skeptics & Geeks

Skeptics and geeks in #Health and #Fitness - Chris Kesser and Dr. David Katz

Chris Kresser

I love this guy for his rigid skepticism. Read his posts or listen to his podcasts, and you will realize what we are lacking in the health industry is a “zero tolerance for bull sh!t” attitude. Chris takes nothing on face value, he will tear apart the claims and see if proper science and research backs it up. And this has earned him tremendous respect and following.

“We may be well fed, but we’re undernourished. The solution is to return to the practice of our ancestors and eat from ‘nose to tail’.” ~ Chris Kresser

What we would want you to do: If you are anything into Paleo or real foods, read his new book, “Your Personal Paleo Code: The 3-Step Plan to Lose Weight, Reverse Disease, and Stay Fit and Healthy for Life“, and develop a skeptic eye like his. Keep questioning, and keep learning!

Dr. David Katz

Heard of NuVal nutrition system used in supermarkets across US? Well, David Katz, M.D., is the man and mind behind this unique technique that is helping consumers make a healthy food choice. Katz is also the founder of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center and clinical instructor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine. And this not half of his introduction. He founded a NPO, “Turn the Tide Foundation” and is the Editor-in-Chief of “Childhood Obesity” (medical journal).

What we would want you to do: Subscribe to his articles O the Oprah Magazine and The New York Times, and follow the NuVal system.

Beyond health

#Productivity and #Zen teachers of 2014 - Leo Babauta and Tim Ferriss

Leo Babauta

When you land on his weblog, Zen Habits, the first thing you notice is the clean design – a minimalist theme, just like his philosophy. Leo is a renowned author and productivity pundit who believes inessential things like physical and mental clutter are the main reason of stress and loss in productivity in modern life.

“Simplicity boils down to two steps: Identify the essential. Eliminate the rest.” ~ Leo Babauta

What we would want you to do: Try his approach of simplification and minimalism and observe what wonders it does to your stress levels, productivity, relationships and overall life.

Tim Ferriss

He is commonly known as the “4-Hour Man” because of his bestselling reads like “The 4-Hour Workweek,” “The 4-Hour Body,” and “The 4-Hour Chef.” On his blog you can find amazing lifehacking tips and tricks. Try them and get sh!t done, fast! His TV show, “The Tim Ferris Experiment” was a huge hit last year. In his show he tried to get more out of his life and stay on his toes all the time by attempting to learn a new skill every week.

What we would want you to do: Try to follow his way of life of mastering a new skill each week, be it just for fun, for fitness, or anything.
