When in college, it’s easy to let your health fall to the wayside. College students tend to over-stress themselves, get too little sleep, and they don’t always reach for the healthiest of meals after a long day in the library. That being said, what changes can students make to create a healthy lifestyle for themselves while they’re in college?

Think About What You Eat

It’s not an unknown fact that many college students tend to live off of microwavable food. The argument here is that they’re the cheapest or that they’re all a student can cook in their dorm room. Be that as it may, there are a couple of ways you can sneak health foods into your diet.

First, let’s look at the argument that eating healthy costs too much. It isn’t quite the case, though. Fruits and veggies are typically much cheaper than buying that frozen pizza or Chinese takeout. Plus, these veggies – even if you have to pick up a microwavable bag of veggies! – have much less sodium than a pack of ramen.

For those who can’t cook in their dorm rooms, you can still sneak healthy snacks into your diet to get some extra nutrition. Fruit, trail mix, and string cheese are all healthy alternative to a bag of chips or sleeve of cookies.

Get Enough Sleep

This is a big one for many college students. College life is typically full of all-night study or work sessions to get assignments done on time. For college-aged students, a minimum of eight hours of sleep is recommended. Unfortunately, many students get only a fraction of that.

When students don’t get enough sleep, they have a harder time focusing in class, their temper is shorter, and they’ll be fatigued, and those are just a few effects! Prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to even more harmful effects.

To help you get some sleep, don’t be afraid to look for help to aid you in getting your assignments done in a reasonable amount of time. Seeking out academic aid such as help with essay writing can lift stress and give you time to rest.

Get Away from the Computer

Students today depend on their laptops more than ever. From taking notes to answering discussion boards and even to reading electronic copies of their textbooks, students seem always to be looking at a screen.

There are adverse effects of this. For one, staring at a screen for too long can affect your sleep schedule thanks to the blue light electronics use. Additionally, staring at a screen all day can increase stress, cause headaches, eye problems, and constant typing can even lead to physical stress if you aren’t careful.

To protect themselves from this, students should take some time away from their screens. Spend time with friends or even relax with a book to reduce screen time.

Get Active

From sitting behind a computer to sitting in a lecture hall, college students can lead a rather sedentary lifestyle if they aren’t careful. To be as healthy as possible, students should take the time to insert some physical activity in their life.

There are a few different ways that students can do this. Inter-mural sports are a great option if you are interested in organized exercise but going to the gym works just as well! Even if you don’t have the time to devote to a while at the gym on your busy days, take a few minutes to walk around campus in a break in your studies.

College is stressful, but students can still take steps to stay healthy. Even little actions such as eating more healthy study snacks and getting a bit of sleep can go a long way.
